Lawn Care Throughout The
Year
This short guide should
help you maintain your lawn throughout the year.
Autumn To Winter
September
If six weeks have passed
since your last summer feed it is a good time to fertilise the lawn again. Use
a suitable autumn/winter feed product from your local suppliers.
Summer heat may have scorched
or damaged areas of the lawn. You can reseed any of these areas.
Bare patches or worn areas
should be treated before reseeding. Use an autumn pre-seeding fertiliser and
re-seed to repair the damage.
Later in the month consider
spiking your lawn to open up the soil and improve drainage. This will help stop
the lawn becoming waterlogged during the winter.
Collect fallen leaves
Continue to mow as needed,
raising the blades slightly October Continue to cut your lawn down to about
25mm while the weather stays warm and dry.
Clear any fallen leaves
- if left they will encourage worm activity and can cause fungal damage.
Put the gathered leaves
on the compost heap or in sacks, punctured with a fork. They will rot down to
provide a rich mulch (leafmould).
Spike the lawn again.
November
If the weather is mild a
final cut may be necessary - do not mow in very wet or frosty weather.
Apply autumn fertiliser.
Collect leaves for the
compost heap or leafmould.
December
Clear away any remaining
leaves from the lawn.
Clean and maintain any gardening
equipment such as lawn mowers and other tools, and put in safe storage.
Dig over any areas to be
seeded in the spring.
