Growing
The basic starting point
for all gardens and gardeners is knowing how to grow and look after your own
plants successfully. Gardening is a skill that is learnt over many years, but
some of the essential elements can be established quite quickly. The following
brief guide will help you to gain an understanding of general plant growing
techniques, covering sections like seeds, seedlings, plants, cuttings and related
subjects.
Guidelines for Successful
Planting?
When you buy plants from
your local supplier, they will have often been grown in a controlled environment,
like a greenhouse. You should consider this before you plant them straight into
your garden.
It is better to allow the
plants to become accustomed to your location, by keeping them in their pots
but placing them outside on a daily basis for increasing amounts of time. Ideally
keeping them inside a greenhouse overnight until they have become used to your
environment.
The other benefit of keeping
the plants in their pots initially, is that you can 'place' them around the
garden to see where they will be best suited for your planting scheme. The mature
height of the plant, growth habits, and colour should all be considered at this
point.
When you are ready to plant,
dig a hole about three times the width of the pot, and twice as deep. Consult
the planting instructions that came with the plant if applicable.
Add in a suitable planting
compost, and some fertilizer to the hole.
Remove the plant from its
container and inspect the roots.
You may find that they need
to be feathered out a bit, as they could have become cramped in the container.
Using your fingers to gently pull the surface roots away from the root ball,
this will induce the roots to grow outward. You can water the root ball of the
plant to help in this situation.
Finally place the plant
into the hole and firm down the soil around the plant to ensure it is well seated
and secure.
Water the plant again.
Monitor the condition of
the plants for several days, making certain that the soil remains moist.
