Growing
The basic starting point
for all gardens and gardeners is knowing how to grow and look after your own
plants successfully. Gardening is a skill that is learnt over many years, but
some of the essential elements can be established quite quickly. The following
brief guide will help you to gain an understanding of general plant growing
techniques, covering sections like seeds, seedlings, plants, cuttings and related
subjects.
Growing Plants from Seeds
- Sowing Seeds?
Once your containers are
ready to sow seeds into (Please refer to the Preparation guide) you should carefully
plan your method of planting. One container for one type of seed, or rows, whatever
method you prefer to use.
In relation to this it
is important to know if any of the seeds require specific growing situations,
or treatments. Obviously if you plant mixed seed type in the same container,
they must have similar care requirements.
Read the instructions on
the seed packet for full details.
Depending on the size of
the seed you may have to create a seed 'trench' or punch a row of small holes
with a dibbing stick. The rows should be at least an inch apart. The planting
depth is critical but is usually one or two times the diameter of the seed.
Read the instructions for the best information.
Carefully distribute the
seeds onto the medium or into the small holes, using care to be sure that they
are not crowded. This will ensure room for growth as well as good light and
air circulation to the seedlings as they develop.
Ideally you should create
a miniature greenhouse environment for the containers. You can buy containers
that have clear lids.
Ensure the containers are
watered to the correct amount to ensure the best growing conditions for the
seeds.
The seeds will need time
to develop, and will require care throughout. One the seeds have reached a suitable
level of growth, you should harden them to the outside environment. See the
guide on Hardening.
