Laying Turf
This sequence of short guides
will help to get the best results for your new lawn. Using the turfing method
to create a lawn is an almost instant result, and it is important to plan things
correctly.
Step 2:Preparing
The Soil
Now that you have decided
on the best turf for your situation. You need to prepare the site. Start by
digging over the site, mix in some compost and condition the soil. Using a tined
cultivator will help to break down lumps, and speed up the process. These can
be hired from local suppliers. Make sure the area is free from weeds, stones
and any debris, before you continue.
Things to remember:
It's important for turf
to be laid on an even surface, so consolidate the soil by walking up and down
heavily on the heel of your shoe, then again from side to side, covering the
entire area.
Rake over the site to produce
a nice fine surface layer. Remember to check that the surface is even across
the whole site, with no bumps or hollows. You can use a plank of wood to check
this.
It is a good idea to sprinkle
a base fertiliser evenly on the soil, this will help to encourage growth. Choose
a slow-release organic feed or a fertiliser and rake it lightly into the soil.
You new turf will not root
into dry soil, so water the entire area if the weather is dry. A suitable nozzle
on a hose will help you to evenly water any large areas.
The next stage is to actually
lay the turf down onto the site.
