Growing
The basic starting point
for all gardens and gardeners is knowing how to grow and look after your own
plants successfully. Gardening is a skill that is learnt over many years, but
some of the essential elements can be established quite quickly. The following
brief guide will help you to gain an understanding of general plant growing
techniques, covering sections like seeds, seedlings, plants, cuttings and related
subjects.
Growing House Plants -
Temperatures
House plants require a balanced
environment to ensure healthy growth. They may suffer and have a shock reaction
to your homes environment if it is different to what they have been used to.
Here are several tips to
help condition the plants to your environment.
Plants will vary in their
temperature requirements based on the species. Most foliage houseplants tolerate
day temperatures of between 65 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit. Night temperatures
should be 10 to 15 degrees Fahrenheit lower.
Generally, as the environmental
temperature increases the requirement for light increases. Excessive temperatures
should be avoided, anything higher than 75 degrees Fahrenheit will be detrimental
to the plant, unless it is used to that kind of environment. Signs of excessive
temperature include weak, spindly plant growth.
It is important to avoid
rapid changes in temperature from cold or hot air drafts. Plants on window ledges
could be exposed to freezing temperatures in winter. Care should be taken with
foliage plants, as they tend to prefer warm night temperatures.
Signs of excessive cold
temperatures include leaves that yellow and fall off suddenly.
