Growing
The basic starting point
for all gardens and gardeners is knowing how to grow and look after your own
plants successfully. Gardening is a skill that is learnt over many years, but
some of the essential elements can be established quite quickly. The following
brief guide will help you to gain an understanding of general plant growing
techniques, covering sections like seeds, seedlings, plants, cuttings and related
subjects.
Growing plants from seed
- Propagation
Most common houseplants
are fairly easy to propagate. You can use this method of plant acquisition to
gain a range of new plants from friends and relatives with the minimum disturbance
to the parent plant.
Usually a part of the plant
such as the stem, leaf or root is cut away, and transplanted into a suitable
rooting environment. Our New plants from Cuttings guide will help you to understand
the basic principles of cuttings.
An example of a good house
plant to take a cutting from is a Geranium.
A suitable cutting should
be taken from a stem of the healthy parent plant. The cut end being dipped in
rooting hormone, and placed into a suitable container with appropriate rooting
compost.
If kept in a humid and well-maintained
growing environment, new plants will develop from the stem cuttings, in about
2 weeks.
