subjects.
Growing House Plants -
Humidity
House plants require a balanced
environment to ensure healthy growth. They may suffer and have a shock reaction
to your homes environment if it is different to what they have been used to.
Here are several tips to
help condition the plants to your environment.
The amount of moisture in
the air affects plant growth. Although some types of plant, such as succulents,
are relatively free from this kind of concern.
Most foliage plants will
suffer if the humidity is less than 15 to 20 percent. Symptoms of low humidity
are leaf drying and curling.
In cold conditions your
heating will tend to dry out the atmosphere inside the house, also very hot
summer days over a prolonged time period will also dry out the air. It is a
good idea to use a room humidifier in these situations if possible.
Spraying plants with clean
water will also help. Avoid excessive spraying though, as leaf disease can develop
if the leaf surface remains wet overnight.
High humidity areas such
as bathrooms and kitchens often are ideal for plants.
Any plants that require
high humidity’s (greater than 50 percent) should ideally be grow in greenhouses.
