Growing
The basic starting point
for all gardens and gardeners is knowing how to grow and look after your own
plants successfully. Gardening is a skill that is learnt over many years, but
some of the essential elements can be established quite quickly. The following
brief guide will help you to gain an understanding of general plant growing
techniques, covering sections like seeds, seedlings, plants, cuttings and related
subjects.
House Plants - Conditioning
House plants require a balanced
environment to ensure healthy growth. They may suffer and have a shock reaction
to your homes environment if it is different to what they have been used to.
Here are several tips to
help condition the plants to your environment.
To start off with you should
expose the plants to the maximum amount of available light entering the room
you intend to keep them in. Over the period of about four weeks you should reduce
the available light to the intensity of the location selected for the plant.
Next, leach the soil mixture
by allowing water to filter down through the soil and escape through the drainage
hole. Repeat this leaching process four or five times. This removes excess fertilizer
or salts that can cause leaf drop when light intensities are low.
Ensure that the environment
you are keeping the plant in will meet its requirements for moisture level and
temperature.
Read any care instructions
that came with the plant and follow them carefully.
